The crew's estimation proved to be right on as Dumas' stop was more than 20 seconds quicker than Briscoe's, whose car got a full tank of fuel.

Dumas and Bernhard won for the second straight year and began from the pole Saturday. Emanuele Pirro in the No. 2 Audi R10 TDI took the lead 10 minutes in and held the lead heading into the final hour before losing it in the final stop sequence.

The No. 7 duo increased their LMP2 championship lead to 13 points.

Pirro and Marco Werner took their first LMP1 class win since Sebring and finished third overall, Audi's best finish since Houston in April. They led the full two hours and 45 minutes in the diesel-powered prototype's Mid-Ohio debut after Dindo Capello in the sister R10 went off course on the opening lap following contact with Stefan Johansson in the Highcroft Racing Acura.

Saturday's win was the second each for Pirro and Werner and their first together at the 2.258-mile circuit.

Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta won for the second straight season in GT1 as Corvette Racing's No. 4 Corvette C6.R led flag-to-flag for a 28-second win over the sister car of Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen.

Gavin started from the class pole and took the checkered flag. O'Connell started 26th after the car failed Friday's post-qualifying inspection. He moved behind Gavin in the overall standings 20 minutes into the race but couldn't get closer than 6 seconds.

Flying Lizard Motorsports won for the third time in four years at Mid-Ohio and the second race in a row as Johannes van Overbeek and Jörg Bergmeister took a two-lap win over Risi Competizione's lead Ferrari of Jaime Melo and Mika Salo.

The Lizard Porsche took the lead when class leader Salo and second-place Tomas Enge in the Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing Ferrari collided and went off course 40 minutes into the race. It was a nearly similar situation to the last event at Lime Rock, and the Lizards took advantage again.

Bergmeister and van Overbeek increased their lead in the championship to 8 points. The other Risi Ferrari of Gianmaria Bruni and Eric Helary finished third in class.

The next round of the American Le Mans Series is the Generac 500 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc. The four-hour race is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT on Saturday, August 11. American Le Mans Radio will have live coverage at americanlemans.com, which also will feature IMSA Live Timing & Scoring. NBC Sports will broadcast the race from 2:30-4:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 12.

Acura Sports Car Challenge

Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, Ohio

Saturday's results

1. Tommy Archer, of Duluth, Minn., will start second.

Although he has two race wins and three front-row starts already this season, Curran picked up his very first SCCA SPEED GT pole of 2007 for Round Seven of the Championship at Mid-Ohio. Curran lapped the 13-turn, 2.258-mile track in 1:25.624 (94.936 mph) behind the wheel of his No. 30 Whelen Engineering Chevrolet Corvette. The time established a new SCCA SPEED GT qualifying lap record.

"These guys are working real hard to get the No. 30 Whelen car up to speed,” Curran said. “It"s been a tough season and we’re trying to get the car back on the podium and get some good finishes and try to gain some more points.

“I knew we had a good car on the Thursday test day. I didn’t have a choice to be here yesterday for practice, but we made a bunch of changes to the car and got it up to speed Thursday.

“It took a little bit to get some heat in the tires. It’s definitely a cool morning and there was a little dampness on the track as well.”

This is Curran’s second pole in less than 24 hours. The busy driver set pole for a Koni Challenge race at Barber Motorsports Park yesterday and was already on a plane bound for Alabama shortly after qualifying at Mid-Ohio.

Tommy Archer, of Duluth, Minn., will start Sunday’s race second. Archer led the qualifying session early and continued to improve to a time of 1:25.718 (94.831 mph) in his No. 5 Mopar/Autohaus Motosport Dodge Viper. While he’s had much success in other forms of racing at Mid-Ohio, it is Archer’s first front-row start at the circuit in SPEED World Challenge competition.

Row two is filled with the K-PAX Porsches. Current point leader Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., will start his No. 22 K-PAX Racing LLC/Jim Haughey Porsche 911 GT3 third on the grid after turning a 1:25.792 (94.750 mph). Michael Galati, of Olmsted, Ohio, put in a 1:26.031 (94.486 mph) in his No. 23 K-PAX Racing LLC/Jim Haughey Porsche 911 GT3, good enough for fourth.

Fastest in the morning practice on Friday, Doug Peterson, of Bonita Springs, Fla., will start his No. 87 3-Dimensional Services Chevrolet Corvette fifth with a 1:26.147 (94.359 mph). Peterson noted that a problem with the Corvette did not allow him to turn a quick lap until late in the session.

Last year’s winner Lou Gigliotti (Chevrolet Corvette) starts sixth, followed by the Cadillac CTS-V teammates of Lawson Aschenbach and Andy Pilgrim. Brian Kubinski (Chevrolet Corvette) and Michael McCann (Dodge Viper) complete the top ten.

The SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT at Mid-Ohio Presented by Trenton Forging race will go green Sunday at 4:15 p.m. (EDT). Visit www.world-challenge.com for live timing and results.

The race will air Saturday, July 28 at 4:00 p.m. (EDT) on SPEED.

TEAM NEWS: Quick Times at Mid-Ohio

Photo by John Thawley With a front row that is over three seconds quicker than last year's P2 times, records fell across the board in American Le Mans qualifying at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car course. The two Dyson Racing Porsche RS Spyders were more than a second quicker than their best times from June testing here. They beat last year's record P2 times by two seconds and will start fifth and ninth in a line-up that was quicker than half of today's IndyCar field. Butch Leitzinger will start fifth and Chris Dyson ninth.

"There does not seem to be a floor in what kind of lap time we can do here: it just gets lower and lower," commented Leitzinger. "The car feels great and the team has been doing so much work on getting a good understanding of the car. It has really been paying dividends. You saw Chris at Lime Rock and now our speed here this weekend."

"Butch and I were talking about our one-two finish here in 2005," said Dyson. "We had a great battle in the beginning of that race with four other cars and tomorrow could be better than that. This track is very good at bringing out a higher level of competitiveness in everybody."

Talking about the June test here, chief engineer Peter Weston noted that they were successful in finding a good off-the-truck set up. "We are mastering the intricacies of this car's philosophy. It is much different than the Lola we have run the past four years. At the test, we paid a lot of attention to the center spring and its different combinations. If the Lola was a 3X3 Rubik's cube when it came to set-up permutations, the Porsche is a 6X6 Rubik's cube. We are discovering there are more contributing factors to making this car go fast. There are so many strings to the car's bow and we continue to find which ones will light the car up."

The seventh race of the American Le Mans Series is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. ET tomorrow, July 21. CBS Sports will broadcast the race from 2 to 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 22. Lonnie Pechnik was seventh in class in the No. 44.

Bergmeister commented, "Mid-Ohio is one of my favorite tracks: it's very technical, but this can make setup challenging because of the combination of elevation changes and off-camber corners. We made a lot of improvements on the No.45 setup during the second practice today, and the guys did a great job getting the car ready for qualifying. Lou came into the pits and after some changes by his son and crew chief Louis Gigliotti he improved slightly moving up to the 5th position.

Moments later his LGM teammate Doug Peterson bettered that lap to move his 3 Dimensional Services Chevy Corvette into the 5th position.

Not to be out done Gigliotti countered with his best lap of 1:26.281 getting the #28 Corvette back into 5th. But hole on Lou Doug dug down and reeled off a 1:26.147 a lap later to salt away the 5th spot for good.

Doug Peterson got out of his yellow Corvette and with a slow shake of his head said that he felt that he should have done a little better today.

“There was a little bit of traffic which really wasn’t that big a problem because I tried to drive around it,” Peterson said. “We had pretty much the same setup as yesterday but we were just a tick off. I’m waiting for the car and I can see the millionths of a second go by.

“Our setup is really close but we can only work with what we have. We are giving up some horsepower because of the sequential gear box and I’m not sure it is worth it. We’ll see.”

“We’re 6th,” said Lou Gigliotti from the seat of his LG Pro Long Tube Headers Chevy Corvette after Mid-Ohio qualifying. “We gave it all we had.

“I think the track did get better as the session went along. If a guy was smart a guy would have waited and gone out with fresh tires on a nice clean track but none of us are that smart.”

“The times were good, they broke the track record by a ton, we broke the record, so the track is definitely faster than last year but we weren’t fast enough. The story is that they added 50 pounds to us and took away horsepower so how are you going to deal with that.”

The LGM Chevy Corvettes of Doug Peterson and Lou Gigliotti will start on the 4th row and take on the tough SPEED World Challenge GT competition as Round 7 will go green on Sunday July 22nd at 5:05 PM EDT. Unfortunately Eric Curran shattered the record with a pole winning time of 1:25.624 in his Whelen Corvette.

While Pobst would have liked to qualify better and win the pole as he had last race in Toronto he felt that starting on the second row was good because his K-PAX Porsche was well suited for the race tomorrow.

“I think we have a really good K-PAX/3R Racing Porsche for the race,” said Randy Pobst with a smile. “We are right in it and I can be consistent with the car.

“We made a couple of little changes and went back out and the improved the car a bunch but we are working against under steer in our Porsche here at Mid-Ohio this weekend but then again in a Porsche that’s not all bad because it helps save the back tires.”

“I think we will be good to race when race day comes around tomorrow,” said Pobst with a sly smile. “This K-PAX/3R Racing Porsche is ready to race!”

Randy, who qualified his Mazda 6 for the Touring Car race in the prior session, said that the GT cars were fortunate not to have had to go out first today.

“It was so early the track wasn’t the best when I went out in the touring car but it was better when I went out in the K-PAX Porsche because I cleaned it up some in my Touring Car first it was really slick and dirty,” said Pobst.

Michael Galati, of Olmsted Ohio, was also well under the track record in his #23 K-PAX/3R Racing Porsche with a best lap of 1:26.031 on lap 5. Chip Herr, of Lititz, Pa., will start second.

Currently running second in the SCCA SPEED Touring Car Drivers’ Championship, Altenburg collected his third pole of 2007. Driving the No. 72 Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development Mazda 6, Altenburg clocked a 1:32.846 (87.551 mph) around the 13-turn, 2.258-mile Mid-Ohio road course, a new SCCA SPEED Touring Car qualifying lap record.

Unlike most SCCA SPEED Touring Car qualifying sessions, where the fastest laps come early in the session, times tumbled late in the 20-minute session that started at 7:25 a.m. After one flying lap, the session was stopped to retrieve a car from the Turn One gravel, leaving just over 10 minutes in the session.

“It was kind of like F1 qualifying, with a lot of drama at the end,” Altenburg said. “It was pretty cool.

“For me, the problem was Turn One. Before our session, they were sweeping it and there was oil dry. We almost went off on the first lap because we were the first two cars through there. To me, the times dropped because Turn One got better and better.

“I was seventh at the red. Usually, you can let the tires cool down and go out for one more run and get a time reasonably close to the first lap. So, I went out and I did a 33.1 and I was on the pole. I was ready to get out of the car, because that’s usually about it. I’m sitting there and sitting there, and the team said ‘Cunningham just did a 33.0.’ So, with the Acura-Mazda battle, I went back out. They didn’t tell me that while I was out there, I fell back to fifth or maybe even worse.

“On my lap, I got through one better than before. I took a little tighter line than usual. The rest of the lap was really no better than the 33.1, it was all about getting through Turn One better.”

Altenburg was quick to thank his team for working to overcome a recent adjustment by the series on the Mazda 6.

“We’ve done a lot to overcome the adjustment, but the weight bias change is going to hurt toward the end of the race. If I can finish on the podium here this weekend, I’ll be real happy.

“I have to thank Mazdaspeed, TriPoint and our new sponsor ChaseCam. It’s another point for Mazda in the Championship and gets me five points closer to Randy [Pobst] in the Drivers’ Championship.”

Winner at Mid-Ohio in 2006, Herr will start his No. 17 STaSIS/Clear Capital/Fred Baker Audi A4 second on the grid after turning a 1:32.911 (87.490 mph).

The second row is all BimmerWorld with Seth Thomas, of Cumming, Ga., starting third and Joey Hand, of Sacramento, Calif., starting fourth. Thomas turned a 1:33.032 (87.376 mph) in his No. 38 BimmerWorld BMW 325i with Hand in the No. 37 Bimmerworld BMW just 0.006-second slower, with a 1:33.038 (87.370 mph).

James Sofronas, of Newport Beach, Calif., puts a third BMW in the top five with a lap of 1:33.270 (87.153 mph) in his No. 29 Global Motorsports Group BMW 325Ci.

Jason Martinelli (BMW 325i), Ian Baas (Audi A4), Adam Pecorari (Audi A4), Peter Cunningham (Acura TSX) and Randy Pobst (Mazda 6) completed the top ten.

The SCCA SPEED World Challenge Touring Car at Mid-Ohio Presented by Trenton Forging race will launch from a standing start at 8:45 a.m. (EDT) on Sunday. Braun – driving with then-teammate Jorg Bergmeister – captured the win in last year’s Porsche 250 presented by Bradley Arant at the Birmingham track.

“We were out there running through our program of changes we wanted to run through,” Braun said. “The car was really good. We’re really working hard to make sure we’ve got a good race car. I don’t think we have that much for them (No. 99 car). Everybody put new tires on at the end of practice, so lowering our time was not a huge surprise. We at Krohn Racing had a good test here, and the guys are working really hard this weekend, working really well together. I think we just have a good car. Nic had the fast time this morning on new tires, and I got in later.”

Alex Gurney, driving the No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stalling Racing Pontiac Riley, led for most of the afternoon session until his fast time was eclipsed by Braun on his session’s last lap. Gurney’s time of 1:22.089 (100.866 mph) was less than a five hundredths of a second behind Braun’s time.

“We’ve been learning the whole time; yesterday, we were really scratching our heads,” said Gurney. “The No. 75 car has been very quick all weekend. We definitely have been improving the GAINSCO car every session, and we improved it quite a bit more in that last session. Jon Fogarty, (team engineer) Kyle Brannan and I really worked to perfect the balance, because this track is very complex and technical. The challenge is to find the best compromise that creates a stable, drivable car.”

The No. 10 SunTrust Racing Pontiac Riley of Max Angelelli ran third fastest, turning a time of 1:22.510 (100.356 mph). Angelelli currently sits second in the points championship behind Scott Pruett and needs a strong finish to close the gap. Angelelli will team this weekend in the No. 10 machine with Memo Gidley.

Two Lexus Rileys followed the Pontiac trio in the top-five of today’s practice sessions, led by the No. 19 Chip Ganassi with Felix Sabates Z-Line Designs/Mission Residential Pontiac Riley driven by Michael Valiante in a time of 1:22.857 (99.931 mph) in fourth. Valiante and teammate Rob Finlay are coming off of a strong second-place effort last week at Iowa Speedway.

Rounding out the top five in Daytona Prototype practice is the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Lexus Riley driven by Oswaldo Negri. Negri lapped the circuit in 1:22.868 (99.918 mph) and will team this weekend with Mark Patterson.

The Daytona Prototype class will qualify Saturday at 10:25 a.m. CT for Sunday’s Porsche 250 with the green flag waving at 2:00 p.m. CT (Live on SPEED).

GRAND AM NEWS: Banner Racing Teammates Collins, Reese Will Share Front Row in Saturday's Grand-Am Rolex Series GT Race

Photo by John Thawley BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (July 20, 2007) – If qualifying is any indication, things are shaping up for a banner weekend for Banner Racing in Saturday’s Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve GT class race at Barber Motorsports Park.

Kelly Collins placed the No. 07 Banner Racing/Banner Engineering Pontiac GXP.R on the pole position for the race, which starts at 3 p.m. CT (Live, on SPEED) Saturday at the Birmingham track, running a time of 1:29.513 (92.500 mph). Collins and co-driver Paul Edwards have qualified on pole four times in the past five races, but are still searching for their first win of 2007.

“Craig (Stanton) was second in line and I was third to start the qualifying session,” Collins said. “David Murry (who was first in line) let us go by. I was going to try to go by Stanton, but he took off. I decided to give him some ground and give me something to chase after. Our Banner Pontiac GXP is the best it’s been in the past two days. We were good this morning but then went the wrong direction this afternoon, so we went back to this morning, used a softer front bar, and ran consistent laps and ran it as hard as we could until we ripped the tires off.”

Starting alongside Collins in the front row is the second Banner Racing entry, the No. 06 Banner Engineering Pontiac GXP.R driven by Leighton Reese. Reese, who will co-drive with Tim Lewis Jr., qualified in a time of 1:29.738 (92.268 mph). Both Collins and Reese set their fast laps on the second lap of the 15-minute qualifying session.

“For my personal ego, we’d like to be P1, but if the 06 or 07 does well, it’s a victory for Pontiac and a victory for Banner,” Reese said. “That’s all we care about right now. Good job for Kelly Collins, he ripped off a flier, and we squeaked one out over Craig Stanton and the Farnbacher guys. It should be a good battle tomorrow.”

Stanton, co-driving the No. 85 Farnbacher Loles Motorsports Shoes For Crews/Recaro Porsche GT3 with Ian Baas, fell just short of Reese with a fast lap of 1:29.747 (92.259 mph) to qualify third. The No. 85 is also searching for its first win in 2007.

Nick Ham will start the race in the No. 70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 alongside of Stanton, after lapping the 2.3-mile, 16-turn permanent road course in 1:30.184 (91.812 mph). Ham and co-driver Sylvain Tremblay have won three times this season. Eric Curran’s No. 03 Georgian Bay Motorsports SCADAPack Corvette is the fourth engine manufacturer in the GT class qualifying top-five, after Curran turned a lap of 1:30.405 (91.587 mph). Curran – who will also start on the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series Street Tuner (ST) – teams this weekend with Jamie Holtom.

Rolex GT championship points leader Dirk Werner will co-drive in tomorrow’s race in the No. 87 Farnbacher Loles Motorsports Marquis Jet/IPC/Recaro Porsche GT3 with Bryce Miller, who qualified in seventh place.

The GT machines will fire up Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. CT (Live on SPEED) for 109 laps (250.7 miles, 400 kilometers) or two-and-a-half hours.
